I hear the bass baritone in the Wanderer—Matthias Goerne deep. But the best rendition I know of Der Leiermann was delivered by the great Bavarian actor Josef Bierbichler ( in Hans Steinbichler’s 2006 film Winterreise), who sits down at the piano in a hotel bar and simply sings. His old-man amateur voice adds a layer of intimacy that visibly moves another hotel guest to tears.
Tbh the Wanderer is such a Tenor(TM) personality that I prefer this cycle with Bostridge XD
Ian Bostridge's book on Winterreise is phenomenal and also serves to reaffirm the Wanderer's place in the dirtbag canon.
